The Girl and the Wolf

While picking berries with her mother, a little girl wanders too far into the woods. When she realizes she is lost, she begins to panic. A large grey wolf makes a sudden appearance between some distant trees. Using his sense of smell, he determines where she came from and decides to help her. Through a series of questions from the wolf, the little girl realizes she had the knowledge and skill to navigate herself--she just needed to remember that those abilities were there all along.

She won the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature for her work on When We Were Alone by David Robertson, and her book Birdsong won the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award. She is the three-time recipient of the Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Award for Owls See Clearly at Night: A Michif Alphabet, Dolphin SOS and My Heart Fills With Happiness. Julie is Cree and Métis and lives in Vancouver.

Vermette, Katherena: -

Katherena Vermette is a Métis writer of poetry, fiction and children's literature. Her first book, North End Love Songs (The Muses' Company), won the 2013 Governor General's Literary Award for English Poetry. Her first novel, The Break (House of Anansi), was shortlisted for the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction and the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. Her National Film Board film this river won the 2017 Canadian Screen Award for Best Short Documentary.
